Rievä Bread

Tampere has been known as “Rievä town”, which tells tell strong status that the local rievä bread has on the region. But is rievä bread still part of the modern meal or does it belong to the past? Are there certain situations for eating the rievä? Is there a certain and specific way to cut it? These questions and more were asked from the local people regarding the past and the present of rievä bread.

Packed Lunch

Traditionally bread has had the central role in the Finnish packed lunch culture. Packed lunch has been eaten in work places, schools, trips and other occasions. Fast-food culture and the new eating habits have shaken the status of bread as a packed lunch. Or have they? What is the ideal packed lunch and what does it consists of? Do people still make traditional packed lunch and where are they eating them? In the video local people are sharing their thoughts on these matters and more.

Bread from Tampere

Bread from Tampere –web exhibition is produced as a part of the Nordic project called Norsam: Bröd i Norden. In the project museums from six different countries examine bread as a part of their national culture. Museums have also produced digital stories regarding the bread themes. Project participants come from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Estonia. Museum Centre Vapriikki and The Finnish Labour Museum Werstas collaborated with a shared digital story regarding the bread culture in Tampere region. Museums went to the Tampere city streets in November/ December 2009 and interviewed local people regarding their relations to bread. In the video interviews people are remembering the local traditional bread called rievä and pondering the status of bread as a part of the packed lunch through time.
